Slow River 1.16

Lisa says… Hi there! We’re trying something a bit different for our comments. Actually putting them on the page for the week. Isn’t that just wild and crazy of us?
So, what’s happening in this week’s page? There’s a cute guy checking Phoebe out, and we’re left thinking if she actually would choose pecan pie over a hot night with the guy. Heh. What would you choose?
David says…So, things are jumping around here, eh? New page layout, ads (producing a dizzying $.06 a day), comments down here instead of off to the side. Exciting times to be alive. And this is page 16. Just 10 more to go in the first chapter.
22 pages would have been more traditional than 26, but since we’re not producing a real comic book, we can be more flexible. Also, I haven’t been fired, which I probably would have for a real comic book.
The diner is very loosely modeled on one I drive past on I20 on the way to my parents’ place, and on some faux-railcar diners here in town. The bar you’ll see in a page or two is also somewhat loosely modeled on a real place. So is downtown Slow River. I grew up in a town with a pretty traditional downtown and town square, and I drew on that for Slow River. Small town Virginia isn’t all THAT different than small town Texas. Mostly more humidity and fewer cowboy hats.
I should really use more reference photos than I do. Google Image search helps a lot, but I’d like to build a good library of visual references. Unfortunately, I’m poor and they’re expensive. Maybe when the ad revenue is up to $.10 a day…
