Domino Girls 101 - Part 1

Comments from LisaWelcome to the first of our Off-Day Updates. In the weeks up to February 1st, I’ll be posting stuff about the webcomic to give you a bit of background about the comic and maybe about David and myself. We’re going to start off with where we got the idea for the Domino Girls to begin with.

David and I both play role playing games. Probably too many for our own good (though David plays far more games than I do). One game that we were both players in was called Muddy Creek, and it was being played using Witchcraft by Eden Studios.

In that game, David and I decided to play a pair of identical twins, blues musicians and followers of the voodoo traditions. They had a website, sold CD’s of their music, toured the country playing small clubs wherever they could book themselves in. Their tour brought them to the small town of Muddy Creek, where they’d been hired to play one night at a local bar during a festival. If they did well the first night, they’d be hired on for the next two.

The game went on for a while, but then the GM disappeared. David and I were having a great time in the game, and we’d had so much fun coming up with the background for Phoebe and Diana. We didn’t want to see all that go down the drain, so we came upon the idea of making this web comic.

Phoebe and Diana have changed in appearance from their original conception for the game. Their magical “specializations” have changed, though the foundation of the powers hasn’t. We came up with our own version of the bad things that were happening (and renaming the town in the same stroke). We added new characters (some good, some evil) and redefined some we’d encountered in the game.

In doing so, we developed the world that the Domino Girls stories are set in. We even created an official “bible” for the webcomic. You’ll probably never see that document, but you will see some of it on the pages of this site. As their world is revealed, the pages will be updated.

We also came up with the outlines for two “books”, a number of plots, and created a complete synopsis for the first story arc, Slow River.
